Prevention Team
Mission Statement – “Empitagan – Bringing about Healing
By listening and learning from the past, we will focus on the well-being of the current and future generations. We will identify the root causes of the problems and take an active role in the healing process.
The focus of this program is to promote, advocate for and raise the level of family and community interaction while increasing the degree of awareness of the problems facing the children of our community.
The goal is also to sustain this for the next seven generations by representing our elders, embracing community members through friendship, harmony, cultural integrity and awareness by providing quality service.
Prevention Project
In November, 2009, we were asked to submit an action plan for a new 5 year project which is sponsored by a tripartite agreement with Quebec, INAC and FNQLHSSC. This project is an enhanced prevention approach, which will work towards reducing the placement of children. This project started in December 2009 and will run until 2014 and will provide additional funding of $ 425,000 per year for a total funding of $ 2,130.000 over 5 years. These dollars are dedicated towards prevention of placement and cannot be used for any other reason.
As we studied the problems in the community, it became evident that this required a team dedicated to the promotion of programs for families and children. The approach we will be taking is by hiring team members, we can attack the problem head on and with commitment and hard work, we will be able to reach more people in a shorter time.
We have started a Prevention Team which consists of 11-12 members who have different job functions but the same common goal – to reduce the placement of children and to improve parenting skills for our community members
